Redundancy Policy

Overview

Updated Redundancy Policy for consultation

The Council’s current Redundancy Policy is dated 2013 and whist procedurally fit for purpose some aspects have benefited from review, including:

  • Procedural clarifications; updated designations; and new section outlining support for employees.
  • The addition of special circumstances relating to pregnancy, maternity, adoption and shared parental leave provisions, following legislative changes in April 2024 within the Employment Rights Bill.
  • The updated policy to cover all employees, including teachers.

It is important that as an employer the Council is fair and transparent in the application of our HR policies and procedures. The Council fully recognises the impact of redundancy on individual employees and commits to taking all possible steps to avoid the need for compulsory redundancies, however where there are posts identified as being at risk of redundancy, there should be clarity and reassurance about process.  Any differences of treatment outlined in the updated policy are directly related to differing national contractual terms and conditions of employment, and provisions relating to specific pension scheme membership and associated legislation.

This consultation seeks the views of ELC employees in relation to the revised Redundancy Policy.
