Closed 10 Nov 2023

Opened 23 Oct 2023

Overview

The remit of the Education and Children's Services Committee of East Lothian Council is the development, determination and review of policy and associated matters relating to Education and Children's Services. The Committee is made up of twelve elected members (Councillors) and four unelected members (one Trade Union representative and three religious appointees). All members of the Committee have full voting rights on matters affecting education policy. Councillors who are not members of the Committee have the right to attend and question officers on any matter being considered but they have no voting rights.

A number of other Local Authority areas in Scotland have already removed the voting rights of unelected members, most recently City of Edinburgh Council. East Lothian Council are now considering the voting rights of unelected members and have opened up this consultation to obtain views and opinions on this.

NB: East Lothian Council are consulting on the removal of the voting rights of unelected members of the Committee and not the removal of their right to sit on the Committee.
