Proposed Change to the School Day at Haddington Primary School
Overview
We would like to hear your views on the proposed change to the school day at Haddington Primary School. The changes to the times of the school day are being proposed to reduce the very long lunch break for our primary one and two classes. P3 lunch break will be slightly earlier, but the length of break will not change. There will be no change to the times of day for P4 - P7.
We think this is important to:
- Reduce the time child for lunch from 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 05 minutes per day. The longer time can be quite difficult for our youngest children. We notice towards the end of this lunch break many children start to become unsettled due to longer times spent in the cold and as a result do not have as positive a lunch break as they most likely would if it was shorter.
- Ensure we can have our support staff available to support learning for the most time we can. Reducing the very long lunch break for P1 and 2 would mean we would be able to redirect some of the support to work with learners.
- Align the school day more to make it easier for specialist teachers to be timetabled to work with classes across both campuses.
Possible times for the school day have previously been shared with families to gather views and changes have been made to the options following this initial consultation and feedback. The most significant change following this consultation has been to adapt the time at the end of the day on a Friday to be closer to the finish times for the P3 to 7 classes.
The plan would be for these times to be in place for August 2025
The closing date for responding to this consultation is Friday 9th May
