We asked

Local residents in Pencaitland for their views on plans to build a wider footpath in Pencaitland from the west end of the village to the primary school and avoiding the main road.

You said

The majority of those who responded said that they were in favour of the proposed path. There were, however, strong objections to addtional car parking spaces being provided in the school grounds.

We did

We have submitted a planning application for the proposed path, taking into account feedback received as a result of the consultation exercise.

Having taken into account the findings of the consultation, it has been agreed to provide an alternative path route from the west end of Pencaitland village to the primary school.

Additional car parking at the school had been proposed, but strong objections were raised via the consultation process and it was decided not to go ahead with this.

The outcome of the consultation with Pencaitland residents can be summarised as follows:

  • Number of comments in support of the provision of an alternative path route to the school - 48
  • Number of comments not in support of the path provision - 36
  • Number of references to the cost of proposals - 11
  • Number objecting to the additional car parking in the school grounds - 16
  • Number asking for the existing traffic signals on the A6093 to be extended to allow the existing footway to be widened - 15

Overview

The Council is consulting on plans to build a wider footpath in Pencaitland running parallel to the main road from the bridge, through the church grounds and directly into the school, thus avoiding the main road pavement.

Why your views matter

In September 2012, plans agreed by a range of community groups and Council transportation officers were expected to be passed by the Planning Committee. The Committe, however, delayed its decision, saying it wanted to ensure locals had another chance to review the plans.

What happens next

The consultation is now closed and a report is being produced by the Council's Senior Transportation Manager. This report will be presented to Cabinet on the 11th of December and is likely to return to the Planning Committee on the 8th January.
